The idea of resorting to the principles of quantum mechanics to speed up computing and simulate complex processes has been around for nearly four decades. What is new in 2019 is its emergency as a feasible technology, potentially as innovative and disruptive as those associated with nanotechnologies or artificial intelligence. This talk offers a brief introduction to some key concepts in quantum computing and discusses its potential impact in science, society and government.
Luís Soares Barbosa is Deputy Head of UNU-EGOV. He is also Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Informatics at the University of Minho. He is also a senior researcher at the High Assurance Software Laboratory at Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Tecnologia e Ciência (HASLab INESC TEC).
In recent years he has coordinated six research projects at the national level, bilateral partnerships with Brazil and China, and served as the Portuguese coordinator for the Language Engineering and Rigorous Software Development ALFA EU-Latin America network. He coordinates the PF-FLAD Chair on “Smart Cities & Smart Governance”, established at the University of Minho with private funding.
