The first part of the seminar will focus on the goals and results of the projects that were developed, or are currently in development, at UNU-EGOV. The second part of the seminar will cover the challenges created by the fast growth of the urbanization rate in the world, as well as the strategies proposed by the United Nations and the Smart Cities concept created to answer those challenges. The strategies that will be presented are mainly related to policies and recommendations of the United Nations, namely 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda; it will also be included the norm ISO/TS 37151. At the end of the seminar some conclusions will be drawn related to the projects of UNU-EGOV, urbanization challenges, possible strategies that may be used and performance indicators.
Nuno Vasco Lopes holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in 1998, a MSc in Telematics by the University of Vigo (2003), a Phd in Computer Science by the University of Minho (2011) and a Post-Doc in Computer Science by the University of Coimbra (2013). He is professor at public and private universities since 1998 and he is currently working at both the University of Minho and at UNU-EGOV, the latter as a Postdoctoral Fellow. His current research interests are Smart Cities, Mobile Networks, Quality of Service, Real-Time Services, Vehicular Networks, Nano-Communication and Internet of Things. He is an IEEE Member within the IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Communications Society, Editor-in-Chief of the ACEEE (Ass. Computer Electronics and Electrical Engineers) International Journal on Communication, and Guest Editor in a Special Issue about Cloud Computing and Internet of Things in the Cluster Computing Journal, the Journal of Networks, Software Tools and Applications.
