UNU-UMinho Scoping Workshop

    UNU-EGOV and the University of Minho organized a scoping workshop on 17 July 2014 at the UNU-EGOV premises in Guimarães to discuss possible areas and modes of collaboration.

    Attendance

    The workshop was attended by 12 faculty members from the University of Minho, namely, from the Departments of Informatics, Information Systems, Law, and Management and Public Administration: Francisco Andrade, Luís Soares Barbosa, Manuel Barbosa, João Alvaro Carvalho, Rui Dinis, Vítor Fonte, António Nestor Ribeiro, Paulo Novais, Isabel Ramos, Luís Paulo Santos, Delfina Soares, and António Tavares. Three members of the academic personnel of UNU-EGOV also attended: Elsa Estevez, Sara Fernandes, and Tomasz Janowski.

    Introduction

    The first presentation was delivered by Tomasz Janowski, who introduced the United Nations University, the newly established Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance, and explained the concept, evolution and trends involving technology adoption by governments including the latest stage in this evolution – Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (EGOV).

    Presentations

    The presentations by the University of Minho introduced research carried out by various departments.

    • Department of Informatics: system and information security, privacy and data protection, online dispute resolution and decision support systems, data visualization, formal methods and software engineering, software architectures, distributed systems and dependability.
    • Department of Information Systems: interoperability, participation, municipality-level enterprise architecture, cyber security and network security, intelligent cyberspace and risk management, crowdsourcing for innovation, and organizational resilience.
    • Department of Public Administration: smart cities, smart regions and open government, including transparency, accountability, and citizen participation and engagement.
    • School of Law: privacy and data protection, criminal and social order, electronic government, and electronic contracting.

    A discussion also took place on how to find, considering existing research by the University of Minho, a common research ground and potential areas of collaboration with UNU-EGOV.
