UNU-EGOV, together with the Municipality of Guimarães and the University of Minho, attended the Portugal Smart Cities Summit 2018. The third edition of this summit, which took place in Lisbon from 11 to 13 April, gathers industry, municipalities, startups, and universities to discuss the emerging themes related to sustainable and smart cities, such as environment, energy, technology, among others.

The summit in Lisbon was the culmination of several smaller events that took place in the days before throughout the whole country. An example of this was the event in the city of Guimarães, the headquarters of UNU-EGOV (14 March 2018). There, Delfina Soares, Head of the Operating Unit, delivered a speech entitled “The Role of Digital Government in Local Administration”. The speech mentioned the importance of considering smart governance when referring to smart cities, as a a city can only be “smart” if the governing entities are “smart” as well. Several new tendencies in the are of EGOV were also mentioned, together with an update on the status of EGOV development in different Portuguese cities.
