“Smart Governance for Sustainable Cities and Communities”, supports the 2030 Agenda SDGs, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the New Urban Agenda, by contributing knowledge of how ICTs are and can be used in the smart governance of sustainable cities and communities. Smart governance is understood to be the use of ICTs to more effectively and sustainably govern cities and communities, and the people inhabiting them.

The research line focuses on review studies and the use of existing data sets rather than empirical work. The project examines existing academic research and practitioner documents to develop a comprehensive understanding of different aspects of smart governance, including structures and organisations, stakeholder roles and relationships, processes and tools, technology and data, and measurement of cities or communities. The expected outputs include academic papers, practitioner reports, policy guidelines and practice notes.
